Nuclear power is of vital importance for the global sustainability. Advanced nuclear fuel cycles with increased barriers against unsanctioned proliferation would help to ensure the development of nuclear power for peaceful use. To stimulate associated research efforts The International Expert Workshop on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Materials is organized by Central Institute for Continuing Education&Training (CIСET), the State Atomic Energy Corporation “ROSATOM” and International Science and Technology Center (ISTC). This workshop is planned to be a logical step in the sequence of the international events focused on the discussing the sustainability of nuclear power from the view-point of proliferation resistance:
The overall objective of this workshop is to provide an interdisciplinary platform for discussing advanced fuel cycles with increased proliferation resistance. The main focus is made on assessment of proliferation resistance of Minor Actinides (Neptunium, Americium, Curium). Their amount increases following the general growth in nuclear energy generation. They are often treated as nuclear waste which is to be incinerated in fast spectrum critical reactors or subcritical ones driven by accelerators. Being doped to uranium or MOX fuels these elements serve to denaturate plutonium through increasing the portion of even isotopes that make plutonium less attractive to potential proliferator. In any case their involvement in fuel cycles is to be carefully investigated from the view point of proliferation resistance. The Workshop intends to bring together experts from industries, universities, research centers and international organizations to discuss
The Workshop is embedded to the 11-th International Conference “Nuclear Power Safety and Nuclear Education” that takes place in Obninsk on a regular base once in two years since 1987. The Conference aims at summarizing recent research activities in the broad area of nuclear safety embracing the following traditional sessions:
